The Department of Preventive Cardiology has a peculiar role to play in the hospital, doing research study and practicing health promotion activities for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The target of survey is residents in Suita-City. In 1987, we started regional registration of cardiovascular diseases which includes stroke and myocardial infarction since 1987, and we also began to give medical examination to randomly sampled subjects in thirties to seventies living in Suita-City. It took five years to get enough basal data since 1988, receiving about 6,600 new participants. We are making a follow-up survey of them biennially.
The health promotion club,"Tomo-no-Kai", which is commonly called"Jun-yu-Kai", was formed in 1993 by above-mentioned participants, and they have been in charge of various preventive and educational studies on cardiovascular diseases. This project aims to do researches on prevention of cardiovascular diseases by means of the community based activity. It also aims to give chances to the participants to live healthy lives, free from diseases in this aged society. These days in Japan, more and more people come to live in big cities where they have no relatives nor acquaintances. In such cities, local activity to prevent cardiovascular disease has not worked enough yet. We aim to show one good model through our activity.
This activity is operated by 4 doctors, 3 nurses, 1 dietitian and 4 clerks, whose works are as follows;
(1) Health Check-up Clinics is performed three times
a week.
(2) Cardiovascular Disease Registration: We visit main
hospitals, emergency hospitals
and cardiovascular centers in Suita-City and its outskirts throughout a year to get medical charts. As the survey charts amounts to more than one thousand cases a year, several doctors are in charge cooperatively.
(3)"Tomo-no-Kai": It includes lectures for disease prevention, teaching classes to promote health, exercise practices, cooking practices, lecture class about resuscitation and semiannual club news, etc. It consists of more than 6,000 members. This meeting is usually held only on weekends for members' convenience. And we are trying to establish effective methods of public health education.
