Cerebrovascular disease (Stroke) is one of three major diseases with high mortality rates in Japan. Aiming to overcome the cerebrovascular diseases, the Department of Cerebrovascular Surgery was established at the National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center in April, 1978. As the leading national center, all the staffs have been working hard against cerebrovascular disorders.
Cerebrovascular diseases include subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracerebral hemorrhage, cerebral infarction and so on. Severe headache, dizziness, numbness, motor weakness, and speech disturbance are common symptoms of these diseases. In some cases, these illnesses may be silent and asymptomatic. Even if they are accompanied with only trivial or no symptoms, they may become worse and critical. This is why the early diagnosis and prompt treatment are necessary. For this reason, we are ready all-time to accept patients with these diseases who need our help. With advanced technologies; MRI, MRA, PET, 3D-CT scan, we can safely detect the disorders before they become serious. If necessary, emergent operations can be performed anytime. Neurosurgical Care Unit (NCU) is also prepared for patients in serious conditions. In our department, cerebral aneurysms which cause subarachnoid hemorrhages, arteriovenous malformations, intracerebral hemorrhages, occlusive cerebrovascular lesions and Moyamoya diseases are mainly treated. Brain tumors, and other cerebral and spinal neurosurgical disorders can also be treated.
Now, 11 expert doctors are fighting in our department against the cerebrovascular diseases.
